Hand out your list of activities and ask students to rate each on a scale of 1 (least fun) to 5 (most fun). Collect and review the lists, paying particular attention to those that come from students most likely to disrupt. Include as many of their highly rated activities as you possibly can.

Even difficult units can incorporate an element of fun. Here is an example of how you might combine content and fun to prepare students for such a unit—in this case, a new unit on fractions: Divide your class into groups of three or four students and explain how advertisements work. Most of them probably already know that the purpose of ads is to get people to think that if they buy something, their life will be better in some way. Then assign each group to perform a skit, write and sing a jingle, and make a poster advertising at least a few important benefits of knowing about fractions. With this activity, your students are not only tapping their creativity and having fun, but also relating positively to the subject before it is even taught.
